  4. Brent Homelessness Charter and The Empty Homes Campaign… Brent Homelessness Charter had been developed by a group of local homeless people (Brent Homeless User Group). The initiative offers for the first time a clear promise for quality services for homeless people ‘Brent Homelessness Charter.’ Danny Maher, B.HUG Chairman explains: ” This is the first time that homeless people are getting a charter promising them quality services.”
  5. North Benwell… The five new homeowning families took a long-term view towards their new neighbourhood, and their proactive presence has directly contributed to the ongoing regeneration of North Benwell.
  6. Latin American Housing Co-op… Years ago, Luis Maya came to Britain from Colombia. One thing struck him about his new country, that there was almost no provision for Spanish speakers from Latin America, many of whom were refugees fleeing from persecution in their own country.
  7. Whitefield Conversation Action Group… Whitefield has 1,285 registered dwellings within the ward, and approximately 4,203 residents. (2001 Census Report) and according to English Heritage, “. . is the only remaining part of a late 19th century Victorian mill town, which remains virtually intact and is of National Importance . . !”
  8. Phoenix Housing … For an anticipated cost of just £6,250 per property, Phoenix Housing Co-operative, based in London’s East End, has brought back into use four long term empty properties at social rent levels under a Service Level Agreement likely to last for 5 years.
  9. Prodding Newsham Park… Secretary of State Ruth Kelly MP has approved a PROD of publicly owned empty homes in Liverpool after a community group raised a PROD. Read their press release
  10. Sheffield: Tackling an empty property hotspot… The Empty Property Team at Sheffield City Council concentrates its work in the East of the city, as this area has the highest concentration of empty properties and has been identified as an area of low demand by Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder
  11. St Eval…St Eval is a village in North Cornwall with over 150 empty houses.  The homes were built as family housing to serve the adjacent military base of RAF St Eval, and nearby RAF St Mawgan.
  12. Stratford upon Avon...On one of the main roads into Stratford on Avon there is a row of fifteen homes that have been empty since 2001.
  13. Coast and Country Redcar Cleveland…In the northeast of England, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council teamed up with Coast & Country Housing Association formed a partnership to bring empty properties back into use, while giving job training, and housing those in need.
  14. Harrogate Youthbuild...Harrogate Youthbuild is a pioneering programme based on the standard Youthbuild model but has been adapted specifically to tackle the issue of housing vulnerable, 16-24 year olds in high demand housing areas with low levels of unemployment.
  15. Housing Action Suffolk...In 1987 in Suffolk and Norfolk a group of local individuals formed a charity that had three aims: get people (particularly society’s most vulnerable such as those suffering from mental health problems, ex-offenders, substance misuses, alcoholics and drug users) into housing, and into work, while simultaneously reducing the number of empty homes.
