Local authorities are reluctant to use new powers to bring empty properties back into use because of scare stories in the national newspapers, according to the Empty Homes Agency. At present, EHN can reveal, not one local authority anywhere in the country has made an application for an EDMO.

Last year the Housing Corporation published their Corporate Plan. I gave the document an initial flick through, and was delighted to see that one of their goals was a commitment to working with housing associations to help them support local authorities in the implementation of the new powers on empty homes contained in the Housing Act 2004.

From July local authorities across the country have been able to use empty dwelling management orders on long-term private empty property. After years of debate, Parliamentary discussion, consultation papers and secondary legislation, these powers are now ready to be used.
