Responding to the mayor of London's announcement today that  £60 million would be available to local authorities and housing associations for bringing empty homes back into use for those in housing need, Chief Executive of the Empty Homes Agency David Ireland said:

"The mayor is right to target housing funding in this way. Not only do empty homes cause local blight and attract petty crime, bringing them back into use creates much needed housing. With the credit crunch causing housebuilders to down tools, this is a sensible and timely way of creating more homes. I call on councils and housing associations in London to grasp the opportunity this offers."
