Independent charity Empty Homes welcomes news that the government’s empty homes programme is to be extended, providing funding for another 5,000 homes to be brought into affordable use.

We’re delighted that Stoke City Council have announced the first large scale homesteading programme in the UK in a decade. Their programme, that we helped the council develop, will see empty homes sold to people on low incomes for £1 each. The number of publicly-owned homes standing empty has fallen by just 3 per cent in five years, a freedom of information request has revealed.

The request to the Communities and Local Government department, carried out by property developer Fresh Start Living, found that the number of empty local authority homes has dropped by just 25,000 to 720,000 since 2006.

In 2006, there were 744,931 empty homes in the UK, with 314,719 remaining empty for a period of more than six months. By 2011 – the most recent statistics [...]

Independent charity Empty Homes is delighted to announce the formation of the National Empty Homes Loans Fund. The fund that will be launched later in the year will offer low interest loans to owners of empty homes to help them bring them into use as affordable housing.

Following the outstanding success of Empty Homes Week 2011 (4th – 10th December) David Ireland, Empty Homes Chief Executive will be meeting with politicians and ministers across party in the New Year to push forward new incentives to ensure more of Britain’s 1 million “Empties” are brought back into use in 2012.

Mr. Ireland has already called on the government to require councils to offer “Empties” to prospective buyers and tenants at discounted prices.
